Students with Disabilities

Support Teacher

Summerdale Primary School is recognised for the high level of support that we provide to our students with disabilities.

We have 4 Support Teachers who are employed to ensure that students with disabilities are provided with the provision of appropriate support and adjustments.

Who should I talk to?

If you have any questions about the educational provision for your child you should contact your child’s teacher in the first instance. Members of Senior Staff are also available to assist you. Mrs Zara Oswin is our Support Coordinator and leads the Support Teacher team.

What does a Support Teacher do?

Support Teachers work with class teachers and all staff involved with a student to coordinate their learning program so that it meets their needs. Support Teachers are highly experienced teachers who have engaged in Professional Learning to build their skills in supporting students with disabilities and other learning requirements.

Support Teachers have a wide range of responsibilities that may include:

  • Providing advice to teachers and teacher assistants
  • Helping with the development of Learning Plans
  • Liaising with specialist support staff or external organisations
  • Helping facilitate communication between the school and families
  • Assisting with ensuring the classroom environment supports the student and helping the school to access special equipment
  • Working with students in the classroom or through running special programs
